A rant about ‘Man Up’

I strongly feel the need to address something that has been bugging me for some time now. Something none of us that suffer with mental health need to hear but yet we continue to be told this and it’s really irritating me and I’m sure many others who get this too.

Ever since I started my blog about my mental health struggles, and also times before that when I’ve posted about my issues on social media, I get a comment or a remark once in a while telling me to ‘Man Up’ or ‘get a grip’ etc etc. Clearly these people have never suffered any issues like depression or anxiety. I don’t think they realise the impact it has on a person who’s going through a personal hell in their own mind. First time I get told to ‘Man Up’ I actually cried. I never expected just how two little words could have an effect on me like that. When you’re suffering with mental health the smallest remark can have a huge significance in that person. You’re already feeling low, you feel like you’re worthless and serve no purpose so to be get told to man up fucking hurts.

Another one that really cracks me up is whenever me or someone else posts anything regarding mental health issues we get told it’s attention seeking. Nothing could be further from the truth. If anything it’s support seeking. People that know me know that I shun away from any kind of attention, I hate parties for me etc. I’m one of these people that will hide away from social events if I could. None of us mental health sufferers seek attention, likes or comments on social media etc. Sometimes too it’s a cry for help because we’re struggling and don’t know which way to turn next. I’m sick and tired of certain individuals thinking that’s all we do it for.

I know 99% of the people that read my blogs and my posts on social media know how much I struggle, I just wish the odd ignorant person would think before they comment, think of the impact your words could have on that individual. You just never know what they are going through at that time and that one remark could lead to something far worse. Just be kind, it’s not a lot to ask for and costs nothing.

Thanks for reading 💙
